UN Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named transitional president following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

Sharaa was under global penalties as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for backing the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

After the meeting, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions for the first time this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to Arab nations.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
