Adolescent Found Deceased After False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The communication added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was not stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged stolen ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions really mattered to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could use the toilet anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing heard from school personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not got that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was freed while investigations continued."
The coroner determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any organization led to or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
